Town of Virden
The town of Virden was founded as a railway construction tent town in 1882. A flood of settlers followed the construction of the railway as they moved westward in an attempt to fulfill their dreams of a better life. Arriving by oxcart and steamship on the Assiniboine River, these pioneers began staking out their homesteads and turning the prairie into prosperous farmland. Virden's population spiked yet again after the discovery of oil in the 1950s. Over the years, that small tent town has grown into the thriving community we know today.
