The Ambrick Family
John Ambrick Sr. arrived in the Breadalbane District in 1885. He immigrated to Canada from Huntingdon, England. His first wife was Ann (Grange) Ambrick who passed away before John moved his family to Canada. John and Ann had three children together; William, Caroline, and John Junior. John brought his two sons William and John Jr. with him to Manitoba. It is uncertain whether Caroline joined them as she was not in the 1901 census. When John came to Manitoba, he worked for the Frame family’s company. Eventually, John purchased section NW 16-11-25 from George Miller, the brother-in-law of James Frame. He took out homestead rights on another section, SW 16-11-25, and built a stone house close to the Assiniboine River. In 1905, John married Isabella Emsely.
John Ambrick Jr., the youngest child of John and Ann, was born in 1874 and died in 1975. He married Elizabeth Summers White (1872-1950) in 1907. They did not have any children.
Caroline Braybrook, John and Ann’s only daughter, was born in 1873 and died August 30th, 1911, at age 38. She married Herbert Braybrook in 1893. Caroline and Herbert came to Canada in 1903 and stayed with her father until they finally moved to the Schmidt farm in the Montgomery District in 1909.
John’s first son, William Ambrick was born in 1871 and died in 1941. He married Elizabeth Hannah Mawer and they had six children together. He built an identical stone house on the top of the valley in his father’s section, NW 16-11-25. His children were Emma Ann, Caroline Alice, Thomas John, Lilly, William (Bill), and Annie Mary. Emma Ann was born in 1892 and died January 17th, 1980. Her first husband was Bernard Russel (1881-1936) and they had nine children together. Her second husband was Thomas Bell (1895-1973). Caroline Alice was born on June 27th, 1897, and died August 4th, 1984. She married George Alexander (1884-1996) on February 25th, 1920. They did not have any children. Thomas John was born May 19th, 1899, and died March 21st, 1975. He married Bertha Victoria Alexander on December 27th, 1927. They did not have any children. Lilly was born January 28th, 1901, and died September 8th, 1956. She married John Gordon Wood (1903-1967) on April 16th, 1919. They had three children: George, John, and Mary. William (Bill) was born March 16th, 1902 and died in 1975. He married Gertrude Kathleen Wood (1903-unknown) on November 18th, 1925. They did not have any children together. Anne Mary was born January 29th, 1904, and died July 27th, 1970. She married Henry Alexander Smith on November 14th, 1928. They had one daughter together, Beatrice Marie Smith (1936-2009).
The Ambrick family name disappeared as neither William or Thomas had children. However, when the family lived in the Breadalbane District they were very good farmers and neighbours. The bloodline carried on with the Emma Russel, Lilly Wood, and Annie Smith.
